Cat Scare

OMG...Last Thurs...our cat gave my dh and I a horrible scare. Bubby and I were taking our afternoon siesta when my dh came over, picked up the cat and laid down on the couch. My dh petted the cat while it was on his chest. The cat jumped off like he usually does and my dh and I kept talking. However things were not okay. The cat started making strange meow sounds and I right away got up and looked at the cat....he was dragging his legs behind him and laying down. I went right over to the cat in a panic. Of course my dh said he's fine leave him alone. I was like "No, this is not fine." I tried to get the kitty to walk but he kept meowing and dragging his back legs. My dh then got up and tried the same...still same thing...the cat would meow louder when we tried to touch his back legs. I quickly called our vet and tried as easily as possible to explain the situation while my dh got the pet carrier. We knew something horrible was happening( I was thinking stroke or broken bones). THe vet was closing so we were told to bring him to a vet emergency center...which was about 30 mins away. We got the cat in the carrier and drove off. Now mind you...I was an emotional reck inside but I maintained my composure since my dh was driving and I could tell he was as upset as I was. The cat meowed all the way to the emergency vet. I prayed and prayed....I asked St. Francis of Assiss.i for his intercession to help our cat. This cat is our "child". We love him so much. My heart ached.

We were the only ones at the vet office so they took us in right away and we had to put the cat on the floor to see if it would walk. He did! But with a limp. He was thankfully no longer dragging his back legs like he did at home. So the vet took x-rays...blah..blah..blah...and nothing was wrong. She thought he may have pulled a muscle etc. Whew! They sent us home with pain meds and instructions to keep the cat confined for five days...yeah right. We'll try. No jumping off off of things.

Once we got home and made the cats room his safe place...I sat down in the living room while my dh went for a walk....(oh yeah...we ate dinner first...since the incident happened while we were discussing what to eat for dinner..we were starving by the time we got home)...I bawled and bawled...Thanks hormon.e meds!!! I let it out. Once I felt better my dh came home and we both relaxed. I told my dh later on that I was a mess inside but at that time...our cat's health was more important than my emotional state of mind. Today the cat is fine and banging on my door to the room where we had to put his cat tree...he's now allowed to jump off anything so we hid his tree in here. I thank God our "baby" is okay.

Our reg vet called me the next day for the emergency center faxed his office a note as to what had happened. He did tell me that we could have watched the cat for a few hours before taking him to the emergency center. If the leg was broken...he wouldn't walk or even try too. I just know at that moment...we panicked and we got scared. I think I got a "sniff" of the panic a parent must feel when a child hurts themselves...is it serious? What do I have to do? Next time,, we'll have to try to remember to take a few breaths and analyze the situation before going into panic mode...easier said than done.

  1. That must have been such a scare!!! I am so glad to hear your little cat is o.k. I know what you mean though about treating your pet like a baby. I do the same thing for my dog. Dh doesn't really care for the fact that when I cook breakfast I make the dog bacon and eggs too. Haha!

Anyways, I am happy everything is o.k. with dear kitty.

    Many prayers,
    Amber

  2. oh no! glad to hear your cat is doing better.

so yeah, this weekend has been a bust - especially starting day 1 and hearing the BIL news all on the same day.. and in person. they are lucky i had already had 2 margaritas when they told me, it definitely blunted my reactions but had to bail soon after.

we have not told them anything specific about us, but apparently BIL has caught on to whats going on with us and they are not too giggly about it all around us, which is nice. apparently he couldn't eat b/c he was too worked up to tell us. terribly, that makes me feel a little better. but it is what it is. the timing was just terrible - day one of my new cycle (my first two days are the most emotional for me with these hormones), and a cycle we spent so much $$ on with that.

hopefully better times are on the way. thank you so much for your comments, support and prayers!!

    how are you feeling?

  3. In those types of situations, I think it's better to overreact than underreact. I'd have taken your baby to the vet immediately too. You never know when it could be something serious or something that's reversible when it's caught early and permanent if caught too late. I'm glad it doesn't seem to be anything serious.

  4. Our cats are like our babies, too. We would have done the same thing -- gotten him in to a vet immediately. You did the right thing! So glad he's doing better. What a scare!
