Blood Draw maddness

OMG! What a morning! Last Friday was CD1 so I called the dr and they told me that I had to have a blood draw on CD3 which is today, Sunday! My cycle/hormone blood draws always seem to happen on the inconvenient weekend days. So....I called a new Prompt Care clinic that opened not too far from my house (definitely not as far as the nearest hsp). They had a lab and they were going to be open so I told I'd be there at 10 am. I get in on time and the girl in the lab couldn't get any blood from me! She pokes and pokes...she finally got two vials but not enough. The dr apparently ordered more than hormone testing....he ordered blood typing, HIV tests, etc. I've had all of these before. The girl (I don't think she was a nurse) asked if I was having surgery soon...yes, but until May. So...since there was no one else.....she has to send me to the hospital anyways!!! So, no convenience there. I had to drive to the hsp and they were expecting me so I got in rather quickly. The one lady got some blood but it stopped and then she couldn't get anymore!!! She too had a hard time getting any veins to pop out. What the heck? I was praying and I was getting tired of being poked. Finally, she called down an expert and a nurse came down to the lab, put a warm compress on my hand and really worked hard to get a little vein to pop out. One guy popped and she took the blood. SO I was finally done. She told me that I MUST drink a lot of water before I have a draw and let labs know that I am a "hard stick". That is lingo for lab workers, I guess. I'm glad she got the testing done or what? I'd have to go back tomorrow? Next time...I may wait until later in the day if I can after I've drank a good amount of water. I don't drink too much water in the morning. I have some bruising on my hands...but it's not too bad. Ugh! Can you imagine? I'm thankful it's done and after lunch I took a 3 hour nap! LOL!!! I was worn out.

  1. Wow, that's sounds like a very crazy day! I had know idea that it is possible to have problems with a blood draw. I am sorry to hear you had to get poked so many times. That is great you took a nap tough...I always, feel like blood draws are exausting. I hope you get the results soon and they turn out well :)

  2. Oh my gosh, I am so sorry! Sounds like you need to drink gallons of water before a blood draw!!! How does one fill up the veins when they are that hard to get too. I would have passed out!

  4. You know, I had the same problem at the hospital on the day of my laparoscopy - they had a difficult time finding a vein to hook up the IV. They eventually found one though. However I was left with a bruise on one arm.

Don't worry about your laparoscopy, my friend. I am praying for you and everything will be allright. You just have to pray and trust in God. I know how difficult it is. I was so nervous before my laparoscopy, but everything turned out fine. The same will happen for you too.

By the way, the surgeon told my husband I had a LOT of endo and adhesians, but he still was able to remove it all in one surgery, thank God! After having open stomach surgery last year (February 2007) to remove two ovarian cysts when they first diagnosed me with endometriosis stage four and then again April 1st 2008, I am not sure how I would have reacted to more surgery in 2008. Do you know what I mean? But it all turned out well.

Now as I'm off work for another week and a half and recovering from my surgery, I'm reading my endometriosis diet book. I'm trying to do all I can to prevent this endo from coming back and messing me up again. The endo diet basically is no meat and no dairy diet. I'm doing pretty good on it so far.

Please don't worry - you will be fine and everything will go well!

May God Bless you and Hubby.

    Love,
    Maria

It will turn out well for you too! I will be thinking of you and praying for you.

  5. Thanks Maria, I needed those words of encouragement! I'll leave this surgery in God's hands. Praise God that your surgery went fine. I don't know if I can give up dairy or meat. Ugh...I don't eat a lot of red meat...I like chicken and pork. hmmm....good luck on your diet adventures. :)
